The project “From Crisis to Coordination? V4 Migration Strategies and Scenarios (V4-MigStrat)”, number 22520302 is a collaborative research initiative led by Mendel University in Brno, in partnership with the University of Lodz, the Institute of Economic Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Kopint Foundation for Economic Research
https://www.visegradfund.org/
The project is co-financed by the governments of Czechia, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia through Visegrad Grants from the International Visegrad Fund. The mission of the fund is to advance ideas for sustainable regional cooperation in Central Europe.
Project Overview
The project “From Crisis to Coordination? V4 Migration Strategies and Scenarios” aims to present:
(1) a comparative analysis of policy and civil society responses at national, regional, and local levels in the Visegrad (V4) countries — Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary – from 2015 to the forced migration from Ukraine
(2) policy scenarios for further migration flows to the V4 countries, especially from Eastern Europe and Asia, and
(3) recommendations for migration and integration management for key stakeholders.
It combines desk research, statistical data analysis, and qualitative interviews with over experts and policymakers on the national, regional, and local levels in the light of recent forced migration from Ukraine. The research will explore the effectiveness of migration policies, the role of civil society, and the socio-economic impacts of migration, with a special focus on vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly.
The project runs from October 2025 to March 2027 and is supported by the International Visegrad Fund.
Innovative Approach
This initiative stands out for its interdisciplinary and multi-method approach. It integrates:
- Comparative policy analysis across V4 countries.
- Scenario modeling using AI tools.
- A unique mix of qualitative interviews and quantitative data harmonization.
- Creation of a publicly accessible V4 Migration Dataset to support future research and policymaking.
The project also emphasizes the under-researched regional and local dimensions of migration, including the roles of municipalities, NGOs, and grassroots organizations.
Target Groups and Impact
The project targets a wide range of stakeholders:
- Policy and decision-makers at national and local levels.
- Regional and local authorities, NGOs, and civil society actors.
- Academics and researchers in migration studies.
- The general public, through media outreach and public webinars.
Country-specific reports will be produced in native languages and English, offering tailored insights and recommendations. These will be disseminated via websites, social media, press releases, and media interviews.
